In his second recording effort, Calamaro immersed himself in a much denser and more experimental atmosphere, moving away from the light pop of his debut. With the collaboration of musicians of the caliber of Luis Alberto Spinetta and Richard Coleman, the album explored more complex sonic textures and lyrics laden with an existentialist melancholy that disconcerted part of his initial audience.
The album was recorded during intense nocturnal sessions where improvisation and the search for new timbres were the constant rule in the studio. Spinetta's presence on tracks like 'Vi la raya' brought a lyrical and harmonic depth that elevated the project's standard, consolidating Andrés as a restless artist who did not fear risking his commercial success for artistic integrity.
Although it did not have the same impact on the sales charts as its predecessor, Vida cruel is considered today a cult gem by the most loyal followers. Its compositions reflect a moment of personal and creative transition, laying the foundations for what would become his more mature and sophisticated style in the years to come, both in Argentina and in Spain.
