Daniel Melero conceived Cámara in 1991 as a bridge between his past in Los Auténticos Decadentes and his solo foray into experimental electronics. Recorded in Buenos Aires with limited resources, the album fused analog samplers, distorted guitars, and cryptic lyrics about perception. Its release on cassette and vinyl immediately made it a cult object within the underground Buenos Aires scene.
The album’s production marked a radical shift toward cold textures and obsessive loops, anticipating the sound of Argentine industrial rock. Tracks like Cámara or El Tiempo played with repetition and noise, defying conventional song structures. Melero stated he aimed to capture the sensation of being constantly watched.
Though it achieved no major commercial success, Cámara deeply influenced musicians like Gustavo Cerati and the local new wave movement. Later critics reclaimed it as a precursor to electroclash and Spanish-language experimental music. Today it is considered a key piece for understanding Argentine rock’s transition into the digital age.
