Travesti

Daniel Melero released Travesti in 1994, an album that challenged Argentine rock conventions by fusing experimental electronics, samplers, and cryptic lyrics. Recorded in Buenos Aires, the record reflected his obsession with identity and technology, using synthesizers and drum machines to create cold, fragmented soundscapes. The cover, featuring his made-up face, encapsulated the gender role questioning that permeated the entire work.

The album was conceived as a sonic manifesto against traditional rock hegemony, incorporating industrial and ambient influences. Melero worked alone on most tracks, manipulating distorted vocals and loops to generate a claustrophobic and poetic atmosphere. Although it initially polarized critics, Travesti became a cult piece that anticipated the sound of Argentine electronic music in the 2000s.

The lyrics explored ambiguity and transformation, with phrases oscillating between the intimate and the abstract. Songs like El Travesti and Máquina de Amor addressed the dissolution of the self in the digital age, while minimalist arrangements accentuated a sense of strangeness. Melero stated that the record was an experiment on how music could blur the boundaries between the human and the mechanical.
