In the early 1990s, Gustavo Cerati and Daniel Melero joined forces to create an experimental album that broke away from traditional Argentine rock. Recorded at Estudio Supersónico in Buenos Aires, Colores Santos blended electronic rock with ambient textures and samples from artists like The Stone Roses, Seal, and Peter Murphy. The album was self-produced by both musicians and released in 1992 under Sony Music.
The album was conceived as an abstract sonic journey, far from the conventional pop structures Cerati explored with Soda Stereo. Melero contributed his expertise in electronic music and experimentation, while Cerati added his melodic sensibility and distinctive voice. The sessions at Supersónico were intense and collaborative, featuring long hours of sample editing and synthetic texture crafting.
Despite its initially mixed reception, Colores Santos eventually became a cult classic in Latin American rock. The record remains a testament to the bold creativity of two artists at their most experimental, and an essential link in the evolution of electronic sound in Argentine music.
