"Cantata Sudamericana" is an ambitious work that Mercedes Sosa recorded in collaboration with composer Ariel Ramírez and poet Félix Luna, the same team behind "Mujeres argentinas." Released in 1972, the album is a cantata that traverses the landscapes, stories, and cultures of South America, from the Andes to Patagonia, from the Amazon to the Southern Cone. Recorded at RCA studios, the album features large-scale orchestral and choral arrangements that accompany Mercedes' voice on an epic and poetic journey through our continent.

The repertoire includes tracks such as "Cantata Sudamericana" (which gives the album its title), "Alfonsina y el mar" (a new version of the classic), "La carta," "El alazán," and "Mujeres argentinas" (also a re-recording). Mercedes' voice sounds here more powerful than ever, accompanied by an orchestra of over 50 musicians and a choir that reinforces the most emotional moments. The production is majestic and the sound quality is excellent, capturing the grandeur of the proposal without losing the intimacy of the singer's voice. The album was performed live at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, to great public and critical acclaim.

The legacy of "Cantata Sudamericana" is that of a fundamental work in Mercedes Sosa's repertoire and in Argentine popular music. Although it did not have the widespread reach of "Mujeres argentinas," it is considered by many specialists to be a work of superior artistic quality, combining academic music with popular music in an organic and moving way. The album was released in several countries and helped consolidate Mercedes' international fame, as she was already a reference point throughout Latin America. A cantata to celebrate our continent and our identity.
