'Cantora 2' is the second part of Mercedes Sosa's posthumous album, released in 2009 together with Cantora 1. This second volume includes duets with other great artists that had not been included on the first CD, completing a panorama of the influence and admiration that Mercedes awakened among her fellow professionals. Also recorded at the Panda studios in Buenos Aires in the last years of her life, the album presents a repertoire of great interpretative and poetic quality, with arrangements and productions that showcase Mercedes' voice in all its splendor.
The album includes duets with artists such as Chico Buarque ('La carta'), Pablo Milanés ('Yo no te pido'), Víctor Heredia ('Razones para vivir'), Luis Alberto Spinetta ('Barro tal vez'), Gustavo Santaolalla ('Solo le pido a Dios'), Teresa Parodi ('Canción del lugar'), Jorge Drexler ('Alfonsina y el mar'), and many others. The version of 'Alfonsina y el mar' as a duet with Drexler is one of the most moving, with two voices intertwining in a tribute to the Argentine poet. 'Barro tal vez' as a duet with Spinetta is another of the peak moments, showing the mutual respect and admiration between two of the greatest artists in Argentine history.
The legacy of 'Cantora 2' is the same as that of Cantora 1: a tribute to the career of Mercedes Sosa and to her influence on Latin American popular music. Both albums complement each other as a diptych that summarizes Mercedes' importance in the culture of the continent, and as a legacy for future generations of musicians and artists. 'Cantora 2' is the second part of that legacy, a celebration of song and of life, so that the voice of Mercedes Sosa, 'La Cantora', may never stop sounding in our hearts and in our collective memory.
