"Serenata para la tierra de uno" was the first album Mercedes Sosa recorded in exile, released in 1979, while she was living in Paris. The title reflects a longing for her Argentine homeland, from which she had been banished by the military dictatorship, and a serenade that sings to the distant homeland from the distance of exile. Recorded at the Philips studios in Paris, the album features a repertoire of songs by Argentine and Latin American authors, chosen by Mercedes to keep alive the memory of her people and their culture.
The album includes tracks such as "Serenata para la tierra de uno" (by María Elena Walsh), "Zamba para no morir", "Canción para una mentira" and "El ausente". Mercedes' voice sounds deeper and more melancholic than ever, as if exile had profoundly marked her register and her interpretive style. The arrangements are sober, with a predominance of acoustic guitars and percussion, in an album that seeks the intimacy of confession rather than the grandeur of her previous works. The album was released in France and later in other countries, but could not be distributed in Argentina due to the censorship of the dictatorship.
The legacy of "Serenata para la tierra de uno" is that of an album that bears witness to the pain of exile and the strength of memory, and that kept Mercedes' voice alive abroad while her name was banned in Argentina. Over time, this album has become a cult object for Mercedes' followers, who find in it an expression of her sensitivity and her commitment to Argentine culture, above political circumstances. A serenade to the distant land, but also a cry of hope for the return.
