'Sino' is an album by Mercedes Sosa released in 1993, in which the singer approaches Brazilian music and singer-songwriter repertoire with a repertoire of great interpretative and poetic quality. The title, which in Spanish means 'destiny' or 'fate', is also a word that resembles 'sinal' (signal in Portuguese), a play on words that reflects the album's intention to build a bridge between Argentine and Brazilian cultures. Recorded at the Polygram studios in Buenos Aires, the album features sober arrangements and careful production that allows Mercedes' voice to shine in all its splendor.
The album includes songs by great Brazilian composers such as Chico Buarque ('Construção'), Caetano Veloso ('Tigresa') and Tom Jobim ('Waters of March'), along with songs by Argentine authors such as Fernando Cabrera ('Madre') and Jorge Fandermole ('El gran premio de la amistad'). The version of 'Construção' is one of the interpretative peaks of the album, with Mercedes appropriating the Portuguese language and conveying the power of Chico Buarque's lyrics. 'Waters of March', in a duet with Brazilian singer Gal Costa, is another of the standout moments, with two great voices of the continent united in a single song.
The legacy of 'Sino' is that of an album that shows the most cosmopolitan side of Mercedes Sosa and her ability to interpret other languages and other cultures with the same emotion and the same quality as her native folklore. The album was very well received by critics in Argentina and Brazil, and contributed to strengthening the musical ties between both shores of the Río de la Plata. 'Sino' is a reflection on destiny and the sign that life marks us, on the identity and diversity of Latin American popular music.
