This album was recorded on November 9, 1958 in New York and released in 1959 by Riverside Records. It is an experimental project focused on percussion, with Art Blakey leading an ensemble of drummers and percussionists, including Sabu Martinez and Ray Barretto. The recording explores Afro-Cuban and African rhythms.

The album is known for its focus on pure percussion, with extended pieces highlighting drum solos and polyrhythms. The title track, 'Holiday for Skins', is a rhythmic suite combining jazz with Caribbean drum traditions. It was produced by Bill Grauer, co-founder of Riverside.

Although not a massive commercial success, 'Holiday for Skins, Vol. 1' is considered a milestone in the fusion of jazz with Latin and African percussion. Vol. 2 was released simultaneously, completing the sessions. Critics highlight its boldness and Blakey's technical mastery.
