Bill Evans recorded this live album on June 15, 1968, at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. It was his first performance at this festival and the only live album he released with his trio of that period, featuring Eddie Gómez on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums.
The concert was produced by Helen Keane, Evans's manager and producer, and released by Verve Records that same year. The recording captures the immediate chemistry of the trio, which had formed only a few months earlier, and stands out for the subtle interaction and melodic sensitivity characteristic of Evans.
The album received critical acclaim and was nominated for a Grammy Award. It is considered one of the best live recordings by Bill Evans, showcasing his ability to transform jazz standards into intimate and complex pieces, with remarkable sonic clarity thanks to the engineering of Val Valentin.
