Planet Waves was Bob Dylan's first studio album released under the Asylum Records label, following his brief return to Columbia Records. It was recorded in November 1973 with The Band as the backing group, marking the first full studio collaboration between Dylan and The Band since the 1960s.
The album reached number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States, becoming Dylan's first album to achieve that position. It includes songs like 'Forever Young', which has become a classic, and 'Tangled Up in Blue', although the latter was re-recorded for the subsequent album 'Blood on the Tracks'.
The album cover was designed by Bob Dylan under the pseudonym 'Bob Dylan (as the artist formerly known as Bob Dylan)', and features an abstract drawing. The title 'Planet Waves' was suggested by poet Allen Ginsberg, though Dylan initially wanted to call it 'Cast Iron Songs'.
