Self Portrait is Bob Dylan's tenth studio album, released on June 8, 1970. It was a double album featuring covers of folk and country songs, as well as instrumental and live tracks. Critical reception was largely negative, with Greil Marcus's famous review in Rolling Stone beginning with the line 'What is this shit?'.
The album was recorded in various sessions in Nashville, Tennessee, and on the Isle of Wight, England, where Dylan had performed in 1969. It includes collaborations with musicians such as David Bromberg and Al Kooper. Despite the criticism, the album reached number 4 on the Billboard charts in the United States.
Over time, Self Portrait has been reassessed by some critics as a deliberately eclectic and personal work. Dylan himself described it as a joke or a response to public expectations. In 2013, an expanded edition titled 'Another Self Portrait' was released, including alternate takes and previously unreleased material.
