Matthew & Son is the debut album by Cat Stevens, released in March 1967. It was produced by Mike Hurst, a former member of The Springfields, and recorded at Decca Studios in London. The album reflects the pop and folk style of the era, with orchestral arrangements characteristic of the Deram sound.
The title track, «Matthew & Son», reached number 2 on the UK singles chart, boosting album sales. Other singles like «I Love My Dog» (No. 28) and «Here Comes My Baby» (No. 4, written by Stevens but popularized by Tremeloes) also charted. The song «The Tramp» was censored in some countries for its lyrics about a homeless man.
Despite its initial success, Stevens felt dissatisfied with the commercial direction of his music and later moved away from pop to explore more introspective sounds. The album was reissued on CD in 1990 with bonus tracks, and a remastered edition with demos and alternate takes was released in 2021.
