Changes Two was recorded in the same sessions as Changes One, between December 27 and 30, 1974, at Atlantic Studios in New York City, with the same lineup: Charles Mingus (bass, piano), Jack Walrath (trumpet), George Adams (tenor sax), Don Pullen (piano), and Dannie Richmond (drums).

Also released in 1975 by Atlantic Records, Changes Two is the second volume of the project, conceived as a direct continuation of the first. It includes compositions that explore a wider emotional range, from blues to political satire.

The album was well received by critics, who praised its depth and Mingus's mastery as a composer and bandleader. Together with Changes One, it forms an essential diptych in Mingus's late discography.
