This album was released in 1978 by Atlantic Records and represents one of Charles Mingus's most experimental forays, fusing jazz with Colombian cumbia rhythms and other Latin influences. The recording sessions took place between 1976 and 1977, with Mingus already affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which limited his ability to play the double bass.

The album includes collaboration with musician and producer Ilhan Mimaroglu, who helped Mingus realize his ideas through overdubs and studio editing. The centerpiece, 'Cumbia & Jazz Fusion', combines Latin percussion with wind sections and orchestration, while other tracks like 'Music for 'Todo Modo'' show the influence of contemporary classical music.

Although it received mixed reviews at the time for its eclectic nature, the album is now recognized as a pioneering example of cross-cultural fusion in jazz. Mingus's illness prevented him from touring for promotion, but the work reflects his unwavering desire to explore new musical territories until the end of his career.
