A tribute album to Billie Holiday, recorded in New York with arrangements by Oliver Nelson. Chet Baker performs songs associated with the legendary singer, in a project conceived by producer Bob Thiele for the Limelight label, a subsidiary of Mercury Records.
The session featured a stellar rhythm section, including pianist Hank Jones, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Connie Kay. Baker, in a period of relative stability, offers a melancholic and respectful interpretation of Holiday's repertoire.
The album did not achieve great success at the time, but is now considered one of Baker's most moving recordings, capturing his vulnerability and deep connection to Billie Holiday's legacy.
