The album 'Is' was recorded in February 1969 at A&R Studios in New York, produced by Chick Corea himself. It is Corea's second album as a leader, following 'Tones for Joan's Bones' (1968).
The lineup includes notable musicians such as Woody Shaw (trumpet), Bennie Maupin (tenor saxophone), Dave Holland (double bass), and Jack DeJohnette (drums). The album reflects Corea's transition from hard bop towards a freer, more experimental style, influenced by modal jazz and the avant-garde.
Originally released by Solid State Records, 'Is' was later reissued on CD by Blue Note. The album cover features an abstract photograph by Pete Turner. The title 'Is' refers to the affirmation of existence, a philosophical concept Corea explored at the time.
