Recorded in April 1971 at Arne Bendiksen Studio in Oslo, Norway, 'Piano Improvisations Vol. 1' is Chick Corea's first solo album for the ECM label. It consists entirely of acoustic piano improvisations, with no overdubs or accompanists.
The album showcases Corea exploring textures and harmonies influenced by contemporary classical music, modal jazz, and Spanish music. Notable pieces include 'The Brain' and 'Where Are You Now?', which reveal his ability to create complex structures in real time.
