Chuck Berry in Memphis was released in 1967 by Mercury Records. It was Berry's first album for this label after leaving Chess, and was recorded at American Sound Studio in Memphis with local session musicians.
The album includes covers of soul and R&B classics such as "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" and "Good Looking Woman". Berry also reinterpreted some of his own hits with a sound more influenced by Southern soul.
Although the album did not generate major sales, it marked a stylistic shift in Berry's career. Production was shared between Berry himself and Tommy Cogbill, a renowned bassist and producer from Memphis.
