Curtis Mayfield released his solo debut album in 1970, after leaving The Impressions. The record was recorded during a period of personal and political transition, with Mayfield taking full control of his music. It received immediate critical acclaim for its fusion of soul, funk, and socially conscious lyrics. The album reached number 19 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The sound of 'Curtis' is characterized by orchestral arrangements, wah-wah guitars, and funky rhythms, with songs like '(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go' and 'Move On Up'. 'We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue' is an anthem of black pride. The production is dense and experimental, showcasing Mayfield's artistic maturity.

Considered one of the best soul albums of the decade, 'Curtis' established Mayfield as a unique voice in African American music. Its influence extends to genres like hip-hop and neo-soul. The album was included in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
