Although often cited as 1958, 'Jazz Impressions of Japan' was recorded and released in 1964 by Columbia Records. The album was produced by Teo Macero and reflects the quartet's tour of Japan in 1964.
The record includes original compositions inspired by Japanese culture, such as 'Tokyo Traffic' and 'Rising Sun', blending Brubeck's jazz with Eastern scales and melodies. Paul Desmond and Joe Morello contribute significantly.
The album reached number 10 on the Billboard jazz albums chart. It is considered an early example of fusion between Western jazz and traditional Japanese music.
