Ella Sings Gershwin is Ella Fitzgerald's first studio album, released in 1950 by Decca Records. It was produced by Norman Granz, who later became her manager and founder of Verve Records. The album focuses exclusively on songs composed by George and Ira Gershwin.
The recordings took place in 1950 in New York, with arrangements by Sonny Burke. Fitzgerald is accompanied by the Ellis Larkins orchestra, a jazz pianist with whom she had previously collaborated. This record marked the beginning of her famous series of albums dedicated to composers of the Great American Songbook.
The album was a critical and commercial success, cementing Fitzgerald as one of the finest interpreters of Gershwin. It includes classic versions of 'Someone to Watch Over Me' and 'But Not for Me'. In 1954, Decca released an expanded version with additional tracks.
