From a Basement on the Hill is the sixth and final studio album by Elliott Smith, released posthumously on October 19, 2004. Smith worked on it from 2001 until his death in 2003, envisioning it as a double album with 25 songs.
After his death, producers Rob Schnapf and Joanna Bolme, along with Smith's family, edited and mixed the recordings to reduce them to a 15-track disc. The album was released by Anti- Records, showcasing a more experimental and darker sound.
The lyrics address themes of depression, addiction, and mortality, reflecting Smith's personal state. Despite its unfinished nature, it received critical acclaim and peaked at number 19 on the Billboard 200 chart.
