Elvis Now was released on February 20, 1972, by RCA Victor. The album reached number 43 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 5 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. It was Elvis's first studio album of 1972 and continued his steady output of new material.

The album compiles songs recorded in two different sessions: the June 1970 sessions in Nashville and the March 1971 sessions at the same studio. It includes covers of popular songs such as 'Help Me Make It Through the Night' by Kris Kristofferson and 'I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago', a traditional song. The track 'Until It's Time for You to Go' was released as a single in some countries.

The album cover features a photograph of Elvis with a blue background, designed by the RCA team. Although it was not one of his most commercially successful albums, Elvis Now showcased Elvis's versatility in performing ballads and songs with gospel and country influences. The album was certified gold by the RIAA in 1992.
