Garth Brooks in... The Life of Chris Gaines is Garth Brooks' seventh studio album, released on September 28, 1999. It is a concept album in which Brooks portrays a fictional character named Chris Gaines, an alternative rock musician, as part of a planned film project that was never completed.
The album includes the single 'Lost in You', which reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and 'It Don't Matter to the Sun', which peaked at number 24. The project was a commercial and critical failure, selling about 2 million copies in the United States, far below expectations.
Despite its negative reception, the album debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and sparked debate about Brooks' versatility. The film project, titled 'The Lamb', was canceled, and Brooks took a break from music until 2001.
