The album 'Crossings' was released in 1972 by Warner Bros. Records as the second record of the 'Mwandishi' trilogy. It continues Hancock's exploration of avant-garde jazz, funk, and electronic music.
Recorded in 1972, the album features an even more extensive use of synthesizers and studio effects, including the ARP 2600 synthesizer and the mellotron. The band, known as 'Mwandishi', included musicians such as Bennie Maupin, Eddie Henderson, Julian Priester, and Buster Williams.
The album includes the extended piece 'Sleeping Giant', which occupies the entire B-side of the original vinyl. 'Crossings' is considered a landmark of experimental jazz fusion, although at the time it received mixed reviews from critics.
