The New Standard is a studio album by Herbie Hancock released in 1996. The project consists of covers of popular rock, pop, and R&B songs from the 1970s and 1980s, reinterpreted in an acoustic jazz context.
The album was recorded in 1995 at The Hit Factory studios in New York. Hancock assembled a top-tier sextet of musicians, including Michael Brecker on saxophone, John Scofield on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Don Alias on percussion.
The New Standard was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album in 1997. The interpretations of tracks like 'New York Minute' by Don Henley and 'Mercy Street' by Peter Gabriel were particularly praised by critics.
