The Stooges' debut album was recorded in October 1968 with producer John Cale, former member of The Velvet Underground. The band, led by Iggy Pop, was then between 18 and 21 years old. Cale imposed a raw, minimalist sound, though the final mix softened some distortions.

The sessions were tense due to creative differences between Cale and the band. Cale added viola and piano parts, but Iggy Pop and the other musicians preferred a more aggressive approach. The album was released in August 1969 and received mixed reviews, though it later became a proto-punk classic.

The record includes iconic songs like 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' and 'No Fun'. Despite its initial poor commercial performance, it deeply influenced punk and alternative rock. The cover, designed by William S. Harvey, features a grainy black-and-white photo of the band.
