This album was released in May 1970 by King Records, at a time when James Brown was redefining his sound toward rawer, more politicized funk. The title reflects the optimism and demand for social change following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the growing African American consciousness.

The record includes extended versions of previously released singles such as 'It's a New Day' and 'Let a Man Come In', as well as a cover of War's 'The World Is a Ghetto'. The recording featured his band The J.B.'s, including Bootsy Collins and Clyde Stubblefield, though some musician credits are not fully documented.

Although not one of Brown's most commercially successful albums, it is regarded by critics as a bridge between his soul era and the more experimental funk of the early 1970s. The cover art depicts Brown with a raised fist, a symbol of Black Power.
