This album was released in 1971 by King Records, at a time when James Brown was experimenting with a more instrumental funk sound. The title reflects the festive and funky atmosphere Brown wanted to convey.
The record mainly features instrumental tracks, with the participation of his band The J.B.'s, although Brown also sings on some songs. It was recorded during the sessions that also produced the single 'Hot Pants (She Got to Use What She Got to Get What She Wants)'.
Despite not being one of his best-known albums, 'Sho Is Funky Down Here' is valued by collectors for its raw and funky sound, and for including extended versions of some of his hits from that period.
