This album is a collaboration between guitarist Kenny Burrell and saxophonist John Coltrane, recorded in a single session on March 25, 1958, at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. It was originally released by Prestige Records in 1963, several years after the recording, as part of a series of releases capitalizing on Coltrane's growing fame.

The session features Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Burrell on guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. The repertoire combines jazz standards and blues, highlighting the chemistry between Burrell and Coltrane, who had previously played together on other Prestige recordings.

The album is considered a notable example of late 1950s hard bop, showcasing Coltrane's lyrical style before his modal and free jazz periods. Although not an immediate commercial success, it has been re-evaluated over time as a significant collaboration between two jazz greats.

Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane recorded together on several occasions for Prestige, and this album compiles one of their most cohesive sessions. Bob Weinstock's production maintains a clean, direct sound characteristic of the label.

The original album cover features a photograph of the two musicians, reflecting Prestige's understated aesthetic of the time. The album has been reissued in multiple formats, including CD and vinyl, with liner notes by Ira Gitler.
