Tanganyika Strut is a studio album by saxophonist John Coltrane, released in 1958 by Savoy Records. The recording sessions took place on April 23, 1958 at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. The album was originally released as part of Savoy's 'New Jazz' series.
The album features Coltrane leading a quartet with Wilbur Harden on trumpet, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. The music combines elements of hard bop with African influences, reflecting the title that references the Tanganyika region in Africa.
Tanganyika Strut was one of Coltrane's early albums as a leader after leaving Miles Davis's quintet. Although not as well-known as his later works, the album shows his growing interest in modal scales and complex rhythms, foreshadowing his 1960s style.
