Classic Cash: Hall of Fame Series was released in 1988 as an album of re-recorded versions of Johnny Cash's greatest hits. Produced again by Jack Clement, the record was conceived to celebrate Cash's induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980.
The album includes new recordings of classics such as 'I Walk the Line', 'Folsom Prison Blues', and 'Ring of Fire', with updated arrangements while maintaining the original essence. Cash sought to regain control of his original Columbia recordings, so he re-recorded these songs for Mercury.
Although some critics considered the versions inferior to the originals, the album was a moderate success, reaching number 66 on the Billboard 200 chart. It is notable as one of Cash's first projects on Mercury before his collaboration with Rick Rubin.
