Johnny Cash recorded this gospel hymns album after leaving Sun Records and signing with Columbia Records in 1958. It was his first album for Columbia and reflects his deep Christian faith, which was always a pillar in his life and music.

The album includes versions of traditional hymns such as 'It Was Jesus' and 'I'll Fly Away', as well as original compositions by Cash. Although it was not a massive commercial success, it solidified his reputation as an artist capable of addressing spiritual themes with authenticity.

Production was handled by Don Law, who worked with Cash on several of his early Columbia albums. The recording sessions took place in Nashville, Tennessee, and the album was released in June 1959.
