One Piece at a Time is Johnny Cash's 49th studio album, released in 1976. The title comes from the hit single of the same name, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in May 1976.
The album was produced by Don Davis and recorded at Columbia Studios in Nashville. The title track, written by Wayne Kemp, tells the story of an auto plant worker who builds a Cadillac piece by piece over the years, based on a true story.
The record includes collaborations with his wife June Carter Cash and the Carter Family, and peaked at number 2 on the Billboard country albums chart. The cover art shows Cash next to a customized car, reflecting the theme of the title track.
