Luminessence is a Keith Jarrett album released in 1974 by ECM Records. It was recorded in December of that year at Tonstudio Bauer in Ludwigsburg, Germany. The album combines string quartet compositions with piano improvisations by Jarrett.
The album features the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra conducted by Mladen Gutesha, along with Jarrett's quartet (Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian). The work is structured in four movements exploring orchestral and jazz textures.
Luminessence is considered a bridge between jazz and contemporary classical music. The central piece, of the same name, was composed by Jarrett as a suite integrating piano solos with string arrangements, showcasing his compositional versatility.
