Ecstasy

Lou Reed
📅 2000🎙 New York🎛 Lou Reed, Hal Willner

Ecstasy is Lou Reed's darkest and most challenging album since Magic and Loss. Co-produced with Hal Willner, the record explores love, obsession, and relational violence in songs of unusual hardness and length — several tracks exceed ten minutes — creating a deliberately uncomfortable and absorbing listening experience.

The album doesn't seek the listener's favor: its dense production and expanded structures are deliberate obstacles that Reed plants between the audience and the music. Tracks like 'Like a Possum' and 'Baton Rouge' are hypnotic journeys that require patience and total attention. 'Modern Dance' and 'Mad' show his ability to capture toxic relationships with surgical precision.

Ecstasy was received with respect but without the enthusiasm of New York or Magic and Loss. With the distance of time, however, it emerges as one of his most consistent late-career works: an album that doesn't compete for attention but demands it, and richly rewards the listener willing to accept its terms.
