Legendary Hearts continued the artistic vein opened by The Blue Mask, though with a somewhat less extreme tone. Reed and his band — with Robert Quine still present on guitar — explored romantic love, urban loneliness, and the contradictions of adult life in songs that balance their predecessor's rawness with greater melodic accessibility.

Tracks like the title 'Legendary Hearts' and 'Martial Law' show Reed at a balance point between direct guitar rock and the more personal lyrical reflections of his later period. The production is again austere, with the sound of the group playing live as the central axis.

Although it received less critical attention than The Blue Mask, Legendary Hearts is a solid and coherent album that consolidated Reed's artistic rebirth. It reflects an artist in full maturity who had found a way to be both authentic and accessible.
