Back to the Barrooms was released in 1980 by MCA Records, also produced by Fuzzy Owen. The album marked a return to the barroom and heartbreak themes that characterized much of Haggard's early career.

The lead single, 'Bar Room Buddies', was a duet with Clint Eastwood, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Another notable single, 'I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink', had already appeared on the previous album but was re-released successfully.

The album was commercially well-received, peaking at number 10 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. It is remembered for its traditional honky-tonk sound and the unusual collaboration with Eastwood.
