Roots Volume 1 is the first album of a two-volume series released by Merle Haggard on his own label Hag Records in 2001. The album was recorded at Haggard's studio in California and produced by himself, reflecting his desire to return to a more traditional and authentic country sound.
The album mainly includes covers of classic songs by artists who influenced Haggard, such as Lefty Frizzell, Hank Williams, and Bob Wills. It also contains one original song, 'I'm a Lonesome Fugitive', which Haggard co-wrote with Liz Anderson and originally recorded in 1966.
Although not a major commercial success, Roots Volume 1 was well received by critics for its focus on country roots and Haggard's sincere performance. The album is part of a larger project in which Haggard sought to reconnect with his early musical influences.
