...And Justice for All is Metallica's fourth studio album, released on August 25, 1988. It was the first album recorded after the death of bassist Cliff Burton in 1986, with Jason Newsted as his replacement.
The album is notorious for its controversial production: Newsted's bass was mixed extremely low, nearly inaudible, and the drums have an unusually dry, compressed sound. The band has acknowledged the mix as a mistake, attributed to inexperience and studio pressure.
The song 'One', based on Dalton Trumbo's novel 'Johnny Got His Gun', became Metallica's first single to enter the Billboard Hot 100 and their first music video, despite the band's initial opposition to making videos. The album debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200.
