'Round About Midnight is Miles Davis's first album for Columbia Records, released in 1957. It was recorded in three sessions between 1955 and 1956, featuring Davis's first classic quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones.
The album's title comes from Thelonious Monk's composition 'Round Midnight, which Davis had popularized at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival. Davis's version became a jazz standard and helped solidify his comeback after overcoming heroin addiction.
The album was a critical and commercial success, marking the start of Davis's collaboration with Columbia. It also includes covers of Charlie Parker's 'Ah-Leu-Cha' and Cole Porter's 'All of You', showcasing the transition from bebop to hard bop.
