After the Rain was released in 1969 on the Cadet Concept label, a subsidiary of Chess Records. The album marked a shift toward a more psychedelic and blues-rock sound, influenced by the era.
The recording sessions took place in Chicago with session musicians such as guitarist Pete Cosey and drummer Morris Jennings. Muddy Waters sought to modernize his sound without losing his Chicago blues essence.
The album includes covers of songs by artists like Little Walter and Howlin' Wolf, along with original compositions. Although not a massive commercial success, it is considered a document of blues' transition into rock.
