Neil Young recorded 'A Letter Home' in a restored 1947 Voice-O-Graph recording booth located at the Third Man Records store in Nashville. The album was produced by Young and Jack White, and was released on April 1, 2014. The recording was done in mono with a deliberately vintage sound, capturing the essence of early vinyl recordings.

The album consists entirely of cover versions of songs that influenced Young, including tracks by Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, and Gordon Lightfoot, among others. The album cover is a handwritten letter by Young addressed to his deceased mother, Edna 'Rassy' Young, which gives the work its title.

The album received mixed reviews but was praised for its intimate and nostalgic approach. It peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200 chart and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Folk Album in 2015.
