Chappaqua Suite is a composition by Ornette Coleman originally created as a soundtrack for the experimental film 'Chappaqua' (1966) by director Conrad Rooks. The music was recorded in a single session on June 15, 1965, at RCA Victor Studios in New York, with a group that included musicians such as Pharoah Sanders and drummer Charles Moffett.
The album was released by Columbia Masterworks in 1966, but Coleman's relationship with the label was brief, and this recording represents one of his forays into film. The suite is characterized by its free structure and the fusion of free jazz elements with broader orchestrations, although the film ultimately used only fragments of the music.
Despite being a minor work in Coleman's discography, Chappaqua Suite is notable for its experimentation and for being one of the saxophonist's early works in a cinematic context. The original recording has been reissued on various occasions, including vinyl and CD formats.
