Offramp is the fifth studio album by Pat Metheny, released in 1982 on ECM Records. It was recorded in September 1981 at Power Station studios in New York, produced by Manfred Eicher. This album marks the first appearance of the Pat Metheny Group with Lyle Mays (keyboards), Steve Rodby (bass), and Dan Gottlieb (drums), along with Metheny on guitars.
The album includes the track 'Are You Going with Me?', which became a classic of the group and an emblematic piece of jazz fusion. The music of Offramp explores electronic and acoustic textures, with Metheny using the Synclavier guitar synthesizer for the first time, allowing him to create innovative soundscapes. The title refers to a highway exit, symbolizing a creative detour.
Offramp won the Grammy Award in 1983 for Best Jazz Fusion Performance, solidifying Metheny's reputation as an innovator. The album was praised for its cohesion and the chemistry among group members, and tracks like 'Au Lait' and 'James' showcase the stylistic breadth of the ensemble. It is considered a foundational work of 1980s jazz fusion.
