This compilation album was released in 1970 by Columbia Records as a follow-up to the successful Volume I from 1961. It includes sixteen original recordings by Robert Johnson made between 1936 and 1937.
The sessions were produced by Don Law in hotel rooms in San Antonio and Dallas, Texas. Johnson recorded these songs acoustically, with his characteristic slide guitar style and haunting voice.
The album significantly contributed to the revival of interest in pre-war blues. Songs like 'Sweet Home Chicago' and 'Cross Road Blues' became anthems of the genre, influencing generations of rock and blues musicians.
