Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music is the sixth studio album by The Smashing Pumpkins, released for free on the internet on September 5, 2000. It was distributed by the band through independent labels and websites, without support from Virgin Records.
The album is the direct sequel to Machina/The Machines of God and completes the conceptual arc. It was recorded during the same sessions as its predecessor, but Virgin refused to release it as a double album. Corgan decided to give it away online to bypass the label's control.
The release included 25 songs distributed across three EPs and one vinyl LP. Although it had no traditional commercial release, it has been highly sought after by collectors. In 2020, a remastered reissue was announced, but it has not yet been officially released.
