The album features collaborations with artists such as India.Arie, Prince, Kim Burrell, En Vogue, Paul McCartney, and Doug E. Fresh.
The album was recorded between 2003 and 2005 at various studios in Los Angeles. Wonder produced the album himself and wrote most of the songs. The lead single, 'From the Bottom of My Heart', peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The album debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on the R&B albums chart.
A Time to Love received generally positive reviews, with praise for its message of love and unity, as well as Wonder's vocal performance. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for 'From the Bottom of My Heart' in 2006. The song 'A Time to Love', featuring India.Arie, was also nominated for a Grammy.
