The Bar-Kays released 'Animal' in 1989 under the Mercury Records label. This album marked a shift towards a sound more oriented to funk and new jack swing, moving away from the soul style of previous works.
The group, which had undergone several member transformations over the years, continued with a lineup that included veteran members such as Larry Dodson (vocals) and James Alexander (bass). 'Animal' did not achieve the commercial success of previous albums like 'Propositions' (1978) or 'Nightcruising' (1981).
Despite not producing major chart hits, the album maintained the band's presence in the late 80s funk scene, with tracks combining danceable rhythms and characteristic lyrics. The album cover featured an animalistic aesthetic matching the title.
